How to receive God’s love

I grew up thinking that receiving God’s love was complicated requiring a special kind of person and lots of determination. I thought that only some type of people could receive God’s love, and only after they worked so hard at it or got some kind of a break. Like an angelic visitation. I have discovered since that receiving God’s love is the easiest thing to do. It is all about knowing how much God loves. I have written a book, Receiving God’s Love. In it, I go into greater detail about how to receive God’s love. But the basis is this: the Greatest Commandment in the Bible is “love God and love your neighbour.” But receiving God’s love depends on the fact that you are created in the image of God. Being created in...

How Jesus processes our suffering

How Jesus processes our suffering

In the Bible, the instance Jesus first encountered Saul of Tarsus shows us God’s true character. Saul, on orders of the High Priest, was on his way to Damascus to deal with a group of people who had fallen under what the religious establishment considered a dangerous heresy – the first Christians. In Acts 9:4b (NIV), Jesus appeared to Saul and said: “Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?” Notice that, although Saul had never met Jesus until this point, Jesus did not acknowledge the Christians Saul was persecuting. Instead, without any narration, Jesus accused Saul of directly persecuting him. Jesus owned the entire persecution and suffering that the first Christians were going through. This is how closely Jesus associates himself with the suffering of...

Betrayal

Jeff had joined a company which distributed fertilizers on credit to poor farmers in one rural area eight years before. The scheme was such that Jeff’s company would be the preferential buyer of all the produce of farmers who used Jeff’s fertilizers on credit. And for the past seven years, the scheme had been successful, attracting new farmers. And everyone had been very diligent, selling their produce according to the contract. Jeff had grown to like this community very much. The farmers were very friendly. Jeff even found Warren, whom he now considered his best friend. But this year, this eighth year, when a record ninety five percent of farmers in the area had joined the scheme, things had gone terribly wrong, Jeff thought bitterly as he walked...

Why is it so hard to take a compliment?

Until recently, I really didn’t think my reluctance to accept compliments was a big deal. I always thought that I had to avoid coming across as pompous and self-important. And apparently, a significant number of people are either generally or in specific situations unable to accept compliments for pretty much similar reasons. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there were several postings online that addressed this particular issue. Interestingly, this reluctance to accept compliments also features in the Bible. Gideon was called the mighty man of valour (Judges 6:11-18). Mary was called called the blessed one. Yet both were troubled because God spoke to them positively. Zachariah actually went blind for a few months when he doubted God’s...

God as an investor

I really believe to my core that every person in this world has the ability to impress God, and I believe that, once in a while, every now and again, we do impress God. We saw how Jesus was impressed by the faith some people demonstrated. God got impressed with Abraham and King David. A little bit of kindness and faith is all it takes to please God. It is not so much how you slave away to live up to some code of behaviour as much as it is about developing empathy and reaching out to others to connect with them in sincerity and in the love of God. Technically speaking, by the way, Abraham was not a Christian when he impressed God. Truth be told, God gets impressed with people who are not even Christians every now and again. God knows them. And once in a while,...

Faith as Intuition

In an earlier post, I shared that faith was a gift that God gives us in times of need. To expand on that, as I was thinking about how somehow religion ends up twisting the process of generating faith, I realised that it would be easier to understand faith by comparing it to intuition. In one sense, faith is similar to intuition. The Bible is clear about how faith should be generated: faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Hearing the word of God is key to generating faith in us. Without hearing the word of God, we stand no chance of developing faith in us. It is no wonder therefore that Christians are commanded to go and preach the Gospel, not to go and fight wars, take captives, and convert them to Christianity. It is just about spreading the...
